What are the required prelicensing courses for New Mexico real estate assoicate brokers?
The associate broker journey begins with a total of 90 mandatory prelicensing courses.
There are three required courses:
- 30 hours in Real Estate Law
- 30 hours in Real Estate Principles and Practice
- 30 hours in Broker Basics
The Real Estate Institute of Las Cruces offers these three courses multiple times every year.

Sue Williams is an experienced associate broker in New Mexico with over 18 years of experience teaching the required prelicensing courses.
How do I become an associate broker in the state of New Mexico?
There are two types of broker licenses in New Mexico: 1) associate broker and 2) qualifying broker.
There are three required courses:
- You must be 18 or older and a legal United States resident.
- You’re required to complete 90 hours of real estate prelicensing courses. These courses must be approved by the New Mexico Real Estate Commission.
- Once your courses are complete, you have three years to apply for and pass your Broker's Examination, which has a national portion and a New Mexico portion. A passing score is 75, and you must obtain it within 90 days of your first examination attempt.
- After passing the exam, you have six months to apply for your associate broker license. This application includes submitting appropriate fees, your course completion certificates, and your fingerprints. All applicants will also undergo a background check.
